Attempt to “Band” the two eagle Oradell Reservoir chicks is abandoned.

On Friday May 11 – Representatives from Dept. of Environmental Protection, Division of Fish and Wildlife arrived at Oradell Reservoir to “Band” the two eagle chicks. Representatives were Kathy Clark, Robert Somes, Dr. Miller-Veterinarian and tree climber, Jeremy (missed his last name).
Ray Cywinski (United Water) guided the party through United Water fencing and forested area to this new nest site which was first observed being built by Al Barrera in January. Old nest on opposite side of reservoir was abandoned.

It quickly became apparent that this new nest was not easily accessible. The nest was 80-90 ft. high on a very difficult tree to climb. After a brief attempt, the climb was stopped for obvious safety reasons.

Following the aborted attempt , and back on Lake Shore Drive looking across the reservoir with our scope, the two chicks were on the side of the nest flapping their wings, probably happy that they were not lowered to the ground for examination and banding.
This is the fifth year that this eagle pair has been observed. The new nest is well chosen, quite isolated inside United Water fencing and 200 feet through a forested area. The nest site overlooks the reservoir with easy access to and from the water.
We wish the chicks well – they should start flying in another six weeks.  – Harry Byrne
